Just an hour northeast of Cabo San Lucas, where pavement turns to dirt roads and donkeys shuffle along turquoise shores, you’ll find the East Cape of Baja California Sur. This remote stretch of coast feels worlds away from the resort laden, party scene most people picture when they think of Cabo. Instead, you’ll find empty beaches, perfectly peeling right-hand surf breaks, and miles of coastline with hardly another soul in sight. If that sounds like your kind of escape, read on for the best places to stay, eat, and explore in East Cape Baja Mexico.

Best time to visit – June-August for surfing, December-April for whale watching.

How many days I’d recommend – A week is ideal, but 3-4 days would also be blissful.

Is it safe? – Yes, I genuinely never felt unsafe. That being said, use common sense, always respect the places you visit, and be kind to the people who live there.

How to get there

One of the best parts about the East Cape is how remote and unspoiled it is. But, this means it takes a little extra effort to get to. I promise, it’s worth it!

Nearby airport – Los Cabos International Airport. From the airport it’s about a 1 hour drive drive.

Rent a car – This is really the only option to get around. We always use Rentalcars.com to find the cheapest/best deals. The roads are all dirt and pretty bumpy, so highly suggest getting a mid-size SUV or larger.

Baja Station $ – Beachfront glamping with a laidback communal vibe. Located directly on a right-hand point break, you can’t beat the location. I loved being able to wake up every morning to watch the sunrise and check the surf straight from bed. I also worked from here a few days and can confirm that the wifi is solid.

NEST Baja $$ – A design-forward boutique hotel with a bojo coastal aesthetic. The property offers stunning views, a restaurant on site, and a communal pool. Plus each room has private terraces and fireplaces.

Villa del Faro $$ – Gorgeous villas with vibrant Mexican decor and coastline views. The on-site restaurant, pool, and private beach access will make this hotel hard to leave.

Where to eat on the East Cape

Even though it’s remote, there’s some stellar restaurants to choose from in the East Cape, especially in La Fortuna.

Restaurante La Fortuna – An unassuming white bus where owner and chef, Victor is whipping up simple yet delicious tacos and burritos. The tuna and the shrimp tacos were our favorite. We also heard glowing reviews about the breakfast burrito.

Zai Sushi – Super fresh sushi and seafood dishes with a Mexican flair. The ‘curricanes’ starter is a must try.

Lateral La Fortuna – Our favorite margaritas and aguachile of the trip were had here! Which is saying a lot since we sampled both at almost every restaurant we visited. Located directly on the beach, you also can’t beat the views.

SHADE – The owners were super kind! Great service with a relaxed ambiance and tasty food.

Tips for Surfing on the East Cape

Perfectly peeling turquoise waves, no wetsuit needed, and less than 10 people in the lineup – this is what my surf dreams are made of thanks to the East Cape.

Best time to visit for surfing – June-August. This is summer in Mexico, so you can expect sunny skies, warm water, and consistent south swells that make for great surfing.

Ability level – Best for intermediate to advanced surfers since it’s mostly point breaks with reef underneath. Watch out for exposed rocks and sea urchins.

Renting a surfboard – Costa Azul Surf Shop has a great selection of quality surfboards if you don’t want to pack your own. They have two locations, both of which are convenient. One is on the East Cape by Nine Palms surf break and the other is in San José del Cabo.

Things to do on the East Cape

If surfing isn’t your thing, no worries! There are still plenty of things to do and they all focus on soaking in the the miles of serene, secluded coastline this area has to offer.

Whale watching – In the winter, humpback and gray whales migrate from Alaska to breed and calve in the warm waters off Baja Sur. During this time, the whales often come close to the shore, where you can see them breach directly from the beach. Peak whale watching season in December-April.

For an even closer look, there’s plenty of boat tours to choose to choose from. Salty Cabo Excursions offers a few different tours including ones at sunrise or sunset.

Snorkel and swim – The Sea of Cortez is known as the ‘Aquarium of the World’ due to its marine life and beautifully calm waters. Book a snorkeling tour to check out some of the best spots. This one leaves out of San José del Cabo, which is only around 30 minutes away.

Long walks on the beach – On some days you can walk for miles without ever seeing another soul. Stroll, search for shells, dive into the water for a quick dip, repeat.

Maybe most importantly, the East Cape is the perfect place to disconnect and relax!

The post East Cape Baja Mexico: Guide to a Surfer’s Paradise appeared first on trust me travel.

Looking for a weekend getaway? Valle de Guadalupe, just two hours south of San Diego, offers world-class wine, food, and scenery at a fraction of the price of California. I’ve visited three times for a girls’ trip, a romantic weekend, and a day trip from Rosarito, and each experience has been equally memorable. The rustic yet upscale vibe, combined with a taste of another culture, makes it a perfect escape without the hassle of flying.

Here’s my travel guide to the best wineries, restaurants, and places to stay, to help you make the most of your weekend in this beautiful Mexican wine region.

3 Day Itinerary – Weekend Trip from San Diego

Day 1

Drive to Valle de Guadalupe, dinner at Fauna

Day 2

Tour and tastings at 2-3 local wineries, dinner at Bloodlust

Day 3

Drive back to San Diego, brunch at Cuatro Cuatros on the way

Nearby airport – Tijuana International Airport (TIJ). If you’re flying into the US, the closest airport is San Diego International Airport (SAN).

Getting around – Drive or hire a driver. Since the main excursion here is visiting local wineries, I’d recommend the latter!

Best season/time to visit – Year-round, but I’d recommend visiting in winter (December to March). This is the low season, when temperatures are mild and hotels are cheap.

How many days I’d recommend – 2 to 3 days is ideal, but a day trip works too in a pinch.

Dog friendly – Many wineries and restaurants welcome dogs! Always safe to double check in advance though.

How to get there

Walk across the border & hire a driver – This is a game-changer. It takes the stress out of crossing the border and navigating unfamiliar roads, so you can fully relax, enjoy the wineries, and soak in the scenery, without a worry.

Emanuel is your guy. Born and raised in the valley, there wasn’t a place we went that the locals didn’t know him and he’s super freaking sweet. You can reach him on WhatsApp to coordinate your weekend +52 646 117 7193.

Drive – Valle is just a 2-hour drive from San Diego, and the journey is part of the fun. You’ll pass beautiful views of the Baja California coastline before the landscape transforms into a rugged, mountainous desert as you get closer to the valley.

A few tips for crossing the border if you decide to drive:

You need auto insurance. Check with your insurance provider to see if you’re covered internationally. If not, purchase insurance from BajaBound.com.

Make sure you have cash for the tolls. They accept USD!

Crossing into Mexico is a breeze. The way back, not so easy. Check border wait times and trends at bwt.cbp.gov and plan to go at off-times. Best case scenario you’re waiting 1 hour. Worse case scenarios 5+ hours…

If you travel to Mexico often, consider getting a SENTRI pass. Easiest way to get one is by registering your vehicle through Global Entry.

Hotels in Valle de Guadalupe

Contemplacion Resort & Spa $$ – After a full day sightseeing, a little buzzed from all the wine, and sleepy from being in the sun – melting into the hot tub under the stars at Hotel Contemplacion proved to be the perfect way to end the night. We had our own private villa with gorgeous views of the valley and the restaurant on site was super convenient for breakfast.

La Villa del Valle $$ – A charming six-bedroom bed and breakfast set amidst breathtaking grounds. With a winery and restaurant on site, the only problem with the place is you might never want to leave.

Mexico en la Piel $$ – Choose from one of their 14 casitas, each with their own private terrace and fireplaces.

Things to do

Valle de Guadalupe is Mexico’s top wine region, so sampling the local wine should absolutely play a leading role in your trip.

Book a wine tour – lean back and let a local do the planning for you! From coordinating transportation, choosing the best wineries, and making reservations – a tour is well worth the cost. There are tons of great wine tours to choose from at varying price points here on Get Your Guide.

If you’re looking for a private, more elevated experience, I highly recommend Calandria Experience. The owner Andrea is a gem and will show you the best time.

Plan your own wine tour – prefer to have full control of your itinerary? You’re talking to the right gal. Checkout my sample itinerary here, as well as some of my favorite wineries and restaurants below. I recommend keeping it to 3 wineries tops in a day, plus dinner!

Las Nubes Bodegas y Viñedos – Arguably one of the best views in Valle can be seen from the patio at Las Nubes. Best paired with a glass of their rose and one of their sweet doggos nestled by your feet.

Cavas Sol y Barro – Visit for the delicious wines, then stay to hear the interesting stories behind their creation, told by the owner, Aimé, in the clay wine cellar he crafted himself.

Seriously, I mean knock your socks off views. To make the experience even better, pair the stunning scenery with one of their fresh seafood dishes, sourced right from the crystal-clear waters below. While it’s technically just outside of Valle, this spot is an absolute must-see when you’re in the area.

I discovered Sri Lanka in a surf magazine. I was instantly drawn to images of turquoise water, surfers without wetsuits, and swaying palm trees. A few google searches later, I quickly learned that in addition to epic waves and pristine coastline, Sri Lanka is home to lush jungles, misty mountaintops, and a rich culture. Suffice to say it was pushed to the top of my bucket list, and I’m happy to report my time on the island lived up to all expectations.

If you’re looking for the perfect mix of surf and exploring everything Sri Lanka has to offer in just two weeks, this guide has you covered!

Surf FAQs

Does Sri Lanka have good surfing? – Yes! There are two main coasts offering stellar surf. On the South Coast, you have places like Hiriketiya, Ahangama, and Weligama. On the East Coast, the main attraction is Arugam Bay.

In efforts to make the most of our 2 weeks, balancing time in the water with exploring the country, we decided to prioritize the South Coast, which will be the focus in this guide.

Best months to visit (and surf) in Sri Lanka – November to April. This is when you can expect sunny skies and the best surf conditions on the South Coast.

If you’re planning to head to the East Coast (home to the legendary Arugam Bay), the best time is the opposite: May to October. Ultimately, it depends on which part of the island you want to explore—just be sure to plan around the island’s two distinct monsoon seasons.

Where to surf in Sri Lanka for beginners – I’d consider myself an intermediate surfer that leans more beginner, and I found many of the breaks on the South Coast to be very beginner-friendly. In addition to the popular point break, Hiriketiya offers a mellower beach break on the west side of the bay. Weligama is a more sprawling beach break where the gentle waves mean plenty of surf schools nearby. And if you’re ready to try a reef break, Ahangama has plenty of breaks dotted along the coast for you to choose from depending on the conditions.

Do you need a wetsuit to surf in Sri Lanka? – No, the water is gloriously warm. I’m talking 80 to 84 °F. So break out those board shorts and bikinis!

How much does it cost to rent a surfboard in Sri Lanka? – 500 LKR (around $2 US at the time) per hour. At almost all of the breaks we visited, there were rentals set-up along the beach and this seemed to be the going rate.

Kandy is a city equal parts chaotic, vibrant, and sacred. A city full of competing sounds – cawing crows, bleating tuk-tuks, thrumming drums, and whining brass horns. A city I had low expectations for, but left wishing I had more time.

At the center of the city is Kandy Lake. Leisurely wander through town, taking in the sights and sounds along the way. By the lake is the Kandyan Cultural Center where you can experience a traditional Kandyan dance performance. After the performance, head next door to visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of the most important Buddhist sites in the world. End the evening with dinner on the roof terrace at Square Peg Hotel overlooking the city.

Ella is a tranquil escape from the chaotic cities of Colombo or Kandy, and a cool respite from the steamy beaches along the southern coast. It offered a breath of fresh air that I found myself craving during our trip.
Where to stay in Ella

Chamodya Home Stay $ – The views are reason alone to book this homestay. The property is ideally located within walking distance to town, but still remote and peaceful. The owner Lilu is an angel on earth and treats you to her delectable homemade breakfast each morning.
Train from Kandy to Ella – If you need to get from Kandy to Ella, what better way than one of the most picturesque train journeys in the world. I can confirm it was a highlight of our trip.

Hike Ella Rock – The hike to Ella Rock offers spectacular views from start to summit and can be completed in roughly 4 hours.

Nine Arches Bridge – Although one of the busiest attractions in Ella, this is a truly impressive piece of architecture. The stone viaduct bridge is framed on all sides by a flourishing jungle, and it towers over lush green tea hills.

If you’re interested in going on safari, I highly recommend a stop at Yala National Park. The park boasts one of the highest populations of leopards in the world, as well as elephants, crocodiles, and a native species called the sloth bear.

All meals are included with your stay, so the main additional cost is the safari, which the staff were super helpful in organizing. A huge plus was that our safari was private, meaning we had our wonderful guide Rangana all to ourselves. We were even the first car in line right when the park opened!

Hiriketiya

A small horseshoe bay tucked into the southern coast of Sri Lanka, with perfect turquoise waves breaking off of the point amidst a backdrop of towering palm trees. Hiriketiya is a town my daydreams wander to often.

Surfing Hiriketiya

The most picturesque place I’ve surfed to date! Two waves, one bay. On the left is a fast-moving pointbreak over reef, and as you pan to the right, a beach break that gets gradually more mellow as it spreads across the cove. The result? Waves that are approachable for generally any level of surfer.

Getting to the surf – Walk. There are plenty of great hotels and surf camps an easy walk from the beach.

Crowds – We went during the off-season (late April. Even then, the water tended to get very cozy, especially at the pointbreak. I recommend going first thing in the morning to score the best conditions and beat the crowds.

Renting a board – The beach is lined with surf rental shacks, so there are plenty of options to choose from. They all offer the same price, so you don’t need to worry about bartering. At the time we visited, boards cost 500 LKR (around $2 US) per hour.

Come for the delicious coffee and locally sourced food, stay for the open-air rooms with private views and sounds of the Indian Ocean.

Dots Bay House $ – Situated along the edge of the bay, you can’t beat the location. Dots offers rooms ranging from shared studio hostels to poolside bungalows, all with laid back vibes.

Ahangama

The last stop on our Sri Lankan adventure, Ahangama is the perfect spot to slow down, soak in your remaining days on the island, and commemorate an incredible trip.

Surfing Ahangama

Ahangama has lots of surf breaks to choose from (Marshmellow, Kabalana, Animals). It’s also an easy tuk-tuk ride to nearby breaks in Weligama and Marissa, making it an ideal home base.

For beginners, Weligama is a great option because it offers a wide beach break with plenty of space to spread out. If you’re ready to graduate from beach to reef break, Marshmellow is a good spot to test the waters. It’s a slow, rolling left and one of the deepest reef breaks on the south coast. My favorite surf session in Sri Lanka was at Marshmellow!

Getting to the surf – Tuk-tuk! The drivers are used to transporting surfers and their boards. Tip: agree on a price before taking your trip to avoid any surprises. A lot of drivers will also happily arrange a time to pick you up after your sesh.

Crowds – Most of the breaks can be seen from the main road. This makes it easy to check the conditions and crowds before paddling out. Like most surf spots, I’d recommend paddling out early to avoid crowds.

More tips – With so many breaks to choose from, we found it really handy to stay at a place like Dreamsea. The staff provided great advice on the local breaks and how to access them safely! Warning: a lot of the reef breaks are covered in sea urchins, so be really careful getting in and out of the water.

There are only two rooms on the property, and they couldn’t be closer to the water’s edge. We spent our last night here, and it was the perfect place to end the trip.

Lighthouse Ahangama $$ – Vibey roof terrace, private beach, and understated rooms with balconies overlooking the ocean.

Where to eat in Ahangama

Manori’s Kitchen – Our favorite curry of the trip we had at Manori’s Kitchen. Requires a tuk-tuk ride and a stroll down some dimly lit streets, but is worth the effort for a traditional home cooked meal!

Hotel de Uncles – For cocktails and light bites, a stop at @hoteldeuncles needs to be on your list. Their espresso martini is the best I’ve ever had. And that’s saying something.

Indigo Indian Bar & Kitchen – Traditional Indian food, delicious thalis, and a beautiful view of sunset from the back lawn.

And that’s a wrap! Sri Lanka is a fairly small country, but there really is such a variety of things to see and do on this island. Other places we considered visiting but didn’t have the time for this trip include: Sigiriya, Arugam Bay, and the capital city of Colombo. That leaves a few good reasons to return, which I fully hope to do at some point down the line.

The post Surf & Explore Sri Lanka: 2 Week Itinerary appeared first on trust me travel.

Nestled in the Sri Lankan highlands amidst rolling tea hills, rushing waterfalls, and misty mountaintops, is the remote town of Ella. A tranquil escape from the chaotic cities of Colombo or Kandy, and a cool respite from the steamy beaches along the southern coast, Ella proves worthy of a spot on your Sri Lankan itinerary.

How to get there

To get to Ella, there are buses from the major cities (Colombo and Kandy), or you can book a taxi from basically anywhere in the country. While these options will certainly get you there, I strongly recommend you to take the train from Kandy to Ella.

Train from Kandy to Ella

If you’re like me, you might be questioning if a 7-hour train ride is really worth it. Sure, everyone says it is one of the most picturesque train journeys in the world, but 7 hours is, well, 7 hours…

Let me stop you right there and reassure you that this journey is absolutely worth the hassle. 7 hours will fly by as you zip past swirling green tea hills, tiny rural towns, rushing waterfalls, and colorful train stations. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Sri Lanka, and it truly lives up to the hype.

After reading many guides (this one I particularly enjoyed) and experiencing the train myself, a few tips for your trip:

🎟️ Buy reserved tickets in advance. This will help ensure you have a seat and don’t have to elbow your way for one. You can do so online through 12go.asia or at the train station. Online tickets go on sale a month before and sell out quickly! If you buy from the train station, go a day or two in advance of your desired trip date.
⏰ Try to avoid weekends. This is a very, very busy train for locals and tourists alike. Book the blue Express train, otherwise this journey will take even longer than 7 hours!
🚂 Choose seats in 2nd or 3rd class, ideally next to a window. In these classes there are windows and doors to peak out of, so you can get the full experience (and views). If you choose to hang your body, arm, leg, etc out of the train, you do so at your own risk! Don’t be dumb…
📸 Best views are on the right side of the train up to Nanu Oya. After that, best views are on the left side. In other words, the views are amazing on both sides! You can also move freely around the carriage, so don’t stress it.

Last tip, enjoy!!! Take it all in. With your eyes, not just your phone and your camera. This is by far the best train ride I’ve experienced to date.

Things to do in Ella

1. Hike Ella Rock

The hike to Ella Rock offers a myriad of views from start to summit. A bridge led us past children gleefully splashing in the rock pools of a trickling clear waterfall. Trails swirled alongside green rice fields and through the backyards of farmhouses. About halfway is a look out point that offers the first sight of the mountain’s peak, cloaked in shifting wispy clouds. At the end of the trek, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views over Ella, across the plunging valley to Little Adam’s Peak on the other side.

We downloaded and followed the route through AllTrails. The trail isn’t always clearly marked, but it was generally easy to follow.

Getting there: The trailhead starts across the tracks from Kithalella Railway Station, which you can walk to from Ella town or take a tuk tuk.
Duration: About 4 hours. This included the time it took for us to walk from our homestay in Ella, to the trail, and make our way back.
Best time to visit: Start early! Before 8am if you can. The sun and heat is killer by midday.
Difficulty: Moderate. I would say most of the hike is actually a walk. About 20 mins from the summit is when it gets really steep, but this portion doesn’t last long.
Cost: There’s a fee to enter the view point at the top (900 rupees at the time I’m writing this – 2024). We almost didn’t go in, thinking there was too much cloud cover to see anything. We luckily thought twice and were proven wrong, because the views are absolutely worth the fees. There are public toilets at the top, as well.
Tip: There’s a rest stop a little more than halfway, where a kind gentleman sells fresh coconuts and water. The views here also happen to be incredible, in case you need a good excuse to take a break.

2. Explore Ella Town

Ella has a number of small restaurants and shops, and most of them are clustered on the main street of Ella Road. For better or worse, tourism has clearly sunk its teeth into this area. There are coffee shops with wooden swings and two-story bars with rotating Guinness signs, but this area is still charming with plenty of gems. We especially enjoyed Cafe One Love – chilled ambiance, lovely staff, and lots of spaces for lounging. An ideal spot for a coffee or a cocktail.

If you’re comfortable driving a scooter, there are a few places you can rent from in this area. Many of the sites in Ella are quite spread out, but the drives to them are very scenic, so this is a great way to explore.

3. Nine Arches Bridge

The Nine Arches Bridge is certainly beautiful, but the crowds are not (lol). This was by far the most touristy attraction we visited in Ella. They even have a train that stops on the track, purely to allow people to pose alongside and on top for a photo op…

For this reason, this was far from our favorite sight, however it was easy to see what the fuss is all about. The stone viaduct bridge is framed on all sides by a flourishing jungle, and it towers over lush green tea hills. It’s a truly impressive piece of architecture.

Getting there: Easiest option is taking a tuk tuk, which will drop you off right by the best view points. We opted to rent a scooter and drive. The roads get quite precarious the closer you get to the bridge. I suggest parking at or near this car park and walking the rest of the way (around 10 minutes).
Best time to visit: If you want to beat the crowds, I suggest going in the morning.
Food and drinks: There are a couple of stands surrounding the bridge selling refreshments. We didn’t make it, but we had multiple recommendations for Asanka Cafe, which offers sweeping aerial views of the bridge.
Cost: Free

4. Ravana Waterfall

As we drove out of Ella, we navigated winding roads along the rolling cliffs. Rounding a bend, we nearly missed it if not for the sudden cluster of parked cars and roadside stalls. There stood the Ravana waterfall, cascading boldly near the road, carving a clear path of flowing water and slick rock through the lush greenery.

There’s a clear viewing area from where we watched cheeky monkeys scampering along the waterfall’s edge. This is a great pit stop, but I don’t think it requires going out of your way for.

Getting there: The waterfall is only 10 minutes drive from Ella, super easy to reach by scooter, car, or tuk tuk.
Cost: Free

Where to eat in Ella

The Clay Pot Ella – A little treehouse overlooking the train tracks with delicious food, lovely ambiance, and the sweetest owners.

Matey Hut – A spot recommended by multiple locals serving classic (and tasty) Sri Lankan curries. We especially enjoyed the fried okra.

Cafe Chill – This will likely be on every guide you read. It is very commercialized and substantially overpriced compared to other options. That being said, the food was very good. We visited for lunch and they had lots of options outside of curry, which was welcomed. There’s also a nightclub in this place if you’re looking to get a little rowdy.

Where to go after Ella, Sri Lanka

Following Ella I’d recommend heading south to Yala National Park for safari or any of the stunning beach towns along the coast. I’ve put together a 2-week itinerary here. If you’re looking for the perfect mix of surf and exploring everything Sri Lanka has to offer, this guide has you covered!

Ella requires a lot of travel to get to. Although absolutely worth it, I was ultimately happy that I front loaded the more chaotic and heavier lift travel days early in the trip, saving relaxing beach days for the end.

The post Complete Guide to 2 Days In Ella, Sri Lanka appeared first on trust me travel.

Lake Garda, or Lago di Garda in Italian, is a crystal clear lake surrounded by alpine mountains. It is a popular holiday destination for Italians and Europeans alike. Many people think to visit the lake in the warmer months to enjoy sailing and swimming, but the winter time is arguably an equally stunning time to visit. Visiting Lake Garda in the winter also provides the bonus of avoiding the summer crowds, while still taking in all of the beauty the region has to offer.

How to Get to Lake Garda

Plane: Lake Garda is accessible from a number of major airports in Northern Italy. Verona, Venice, and Milan are reasonably close, and each city is worth visiting for its own history, charm, and astoundingly good food. Visit at least one of them before making your way to the lake.

Car: The easiest and most accessible way to reach Lake Garda is by car. Lake Garda is very spread out, so by renting a car you will have full independence on your itinerary. From Verona to Lake Garda is only 1 hour by car, while Milan to Lake Garda will take you 2.5 hours.

Train: Italy is incredibly well connected by train. There are trains to Lake Garda, but only to specific regions. I suggest using the trains to hop from Venice to Verona, and then picking up a car from there.

Where to Stay in Lake Garda

Lago di Garda is Italy’s largest lake and offers a variety of areas to explore. We chose to stay in the northern region, near Riva del Garda, known for its mountain biking, scenic hiking trails, and easy access to the lake.

Da la Babi $$ – A modern eco-friendly Airbnb nestled on an olive tree grove. Barbara and Nicola’s stunning property boasts sprawling views of Lake Garda and the surrounding mountains. Every morning we awoke to a homemade vegan breakfast made by Barbara herself, which still rivals any breakfast I’ve ever had. You’ll need a car to access the place, but the seclusion adds to the charm.

Hotel Villa Enrica $$- If you want to be closer Lake Garda and the town of Riva del Garda along it’s edge, Hotel Villa Enrica offers the ideal location. Bonus: they offer terraced rooms with private hot tubs and postcard worthy views.

Eco Garda Hill $ – Private apartment with a balcony, mountain views, and stellar reviews!

Things to Do in Lake Garda in Winter

As previously mentioned, Lake Garda is quite big, so you will be spoilt for choice. From candy-colored promenades to jaw-dropping viewpoints, there is a little something for everyone. In efforts to ensure this post isn’t too long, I have put together a detailed article on 10 Awe-Inspiring Thing to Do in & Around Northern Lake Garda, but you can find those 10 attractions also listed below.

Visit Riva Del Garda

Hike to Croce dei Colodri

Sunset at Sentiero Busatte Tempesta

Walk around Lago di Tenno

Peruse Casarti Canale di Tenno

Stroll Strada de Ponale

Visit Arco Castle

Marvel at Santuario Madonna Della Corona

Cable car to the top of Monte Baldo

Road trip through Northern Italy

Best Month to Visit Lake Garda

January / February

I think you can probably guess from the title and tone of this blog post that we would highly suggest visiting Lake Garda during the winter months. The truth is it ultimately depends what type of trip you are looking for. We visited in February, which provided very moderate temperatures, bright clear blue skies, and the ideal conditions for hiking and walking outdoors. My favorite part about visiting in winter was avoiding the crowds. Almost everyone we came in contact with was local to the area.

Does Lake Garda get snow in the winter? Yes, Lake Garda can get snow in winter, though it’s rare at the lower elevations near the lake. The surrounding mountains, especially in the northern region of Trentino, are often snow-capped starting in November, creating an even more magical and picturesque landscape.

For those looking to ski or snowboard, Monte Baldo or the Dolomites are great options nearby.

May / June

If you are keen to take advantage of warmer temperatures I would suggest visiting in spring. During these times you can still hope to avoid the summer rush, as well as stifling heat and humidity which comes with the regions peak visiting months in July / August.

Lake Garda is quite large, with many beautiful towns to discover along its sparkling edges. After much research, we decided to focus our time in the northernmost region of the lake, a region called Trentino. This is an area filled with endless natural beauty – incredible hikes, jaw-dropping viewpoints, and mesmerizing lake views. Read on for 10 Awe-Inspiring Things To Do in & Around Northern Lake Garda.

1. Hike to Croce dei Colodri

A local hike offering jaw-dropping views. This was nowhere on our itinerary until our Airbnb host Nicola at Da la Babi mentioned it. I’m so glad he encouraged us to go because it was a highlight of the trip. Input a church called St Maria Di Laghel into your navigation as your starting point. Parking can be found nearby, and to the left of the church is the beginning of the hiking trail.

The hike will take 30-40 minutes in total and is a descent uphill climb. You will know you have reached the top when you’re welcomed by Croce dei Colodri, a giant iron cross. Just beyond on the cross is the real treasure, sweeping views across Riva del Garda including arial views of Arco Castle, Lake Garda and the mountains in the distance.

2. Sunset at Sentiero Busatte Tempesta

Talk about breathtaking panoramic views, the ones at Sentiero Busatte Tempesta cannot be missed! Sentiero Busatte Tempesta is a collection of walking trails and cliff side staircases, starting in Busatte and spanning along Lake Garda to a town called Tempesta. Hands down, the best views of Lake Garda we were lucky enough to witness.

Free parking can be found at the Busatte parking lot. From here, you will walk through Busatte Adventure Park before reaching the clearly marked entrance to the path. The walk is easy to moderate in difficulty, but definitely not advised for those afraid of heights! In total the walk is approximately three hours. I suggest giving yourself plenty of daylight to work with, but witnessing sunset here is something special.

3. Visit Arco Castle

Sitting pretty, looking out over the city of Riva del Garda, is the beautifully regal Arco Castle. Arco Castle is a staple of the Garda Trentino landscape. The castle offers views across the town, valley and mountains surrounding. Cost of admission is only 3.50 euros. The castle is generally open from 10am-6pm. You can check for opening times through the link here.

4. Walk around Lago di Tenno

Lago di Tenno is a crystal clear mountain lake featuring the most magnificent shades of aqua blue and green water. The lake is popular in the summer for swimming and boating, but during the winter the lake was quiet and serene. The surface of the lake laid flat and unwavering, like a perfect sheet of mirrored glass reflecting the snowcapped mountains and blue skies above. A walking path around the lake provides the perfect trail to clear your head and breathe in the fresh mountain air.

5. Peruse Casartisti Canale di Tenno

Just a 5 minute drive from Lago di Tenno is the medieval village of Casartisti Canale Di Tenno. This is the perfect place to stop for lunch or an afternoon snack while admiring architecture that will inevitably have you envisioning yourself as a character in a magical story book.

6. Stroll Strada de Ponale

Not too far from the city center of Riva del Garda is a lovely path called Strada de Ponale. A popular spot for biking, walking, and running with minimal incline and fantastic views along Lake Garda. Continue along the path for approximately one hour and be rewarded with stunning views alongside a well deserved pint and snack at restaurant Ponale Alte Belvedere.

7. Visit Riva del Garda

Nestled in the northernmost section of Lake Garda is Riva del Garda. The emerald green lake is surrounded by candy-colored hotels, with mountains towering across its outer edges. The masses flock here during the summer, but winter offers a quiet, tranquil oasis.

Wander the outer edges of the lake, with mountaintop views straight to the bottom. When you get hungry, make your way to Osteria il Gallo for a choice of seafood and classic Northern Italian dishes in a rustic and unassuming setting.

8. Cable car to the top of Monte Baldo

The mountain range trailing the northeast side of Lake Garda is Monte Baldo. A 30-minute drive from Santuario Madonna della Corona will lead you to the Funivia (Cable Car) Malcesine Monte Baldo. This cable car provides 360-degree views of Lake Garda, Monte Baldo, and the many Italian villages below. From the top you can hike, ski, or even mountain bike. Be sure to check their website here for timetables and rates on passes.

9. Visit Santuario Madonna Della Corona

A cliffside chapel suspended between heaven and earth, Santuario Madonna Della Corona is a truly incredible sight to see. The centuries old church isn’t located directly on Lake Garda, but it is well worth the detour. The church is especially easy to access on your way to Lake Garda if you’re driving from Venice or Verona. I have put together a post on how to get to Santuario Madonna Della Corona, including notes on the best photography spots to capture the divinity of this sanctuary.

10. Road trip through Northern Italy

There is incredible beauty and culture to be discovered across northern Italy. Each town unearths a different taste, style, and character. Starting in Venice, life is slow, the cicheti are plenty, and the Aperol spritz is flowing. A short train ride will find you transported to the medieval streets of Verona. Here, romantic stone alleyways pair perfectly with the candle-lit osterias, offering comforting bowls of risotto. Lastly, a winding drive through alpine villages leads to the towns of Trentino, where the air is cleaner and the world is wilder.

Where to Stay in Northern Lake Garda

Conclusion

For more details on where to stay in Lake Garda, how to get there, and the best month to visit – check out our post on a Weekend Guide to Visiting Lake Garda. We had two days in the Trentino region, which was the breath of fresh air away from city life that we needed. If you have the ability to stay longer, I highly suggest it! I can say with certainty that I look forward to returning and exploring further into the Trentino-Alto Adige region of Italy.

This has been one of the most fun blog posts to write so far. My “research” involved asking friends, family, and followers for their recommendations on movies that inspire wanderlust, and then proceeding to watch every movie on that list. I have included movies across a range of genres, with settings scattered all around the world. Whether you’re looking for inspiration for your next trip, or simply need a little escape from the daily routine, I hope that this list of 25 travel films will include a little something for everyone.

1. About Time

FILMED IN ENGLAND

One of my favourite travel films of all time, but don’t let that sway you. About Time is a a rom-com about a young English bloke who discovers he can time travel and uses this power to win over the love of his life. Both heartwarming and hilarious, About Time is filmed partly in London and partly in Cornwall, featuring some stunning shots of the south Cornish coastline.

2. Lion

FILMED IN INDIA AND AUSTRALIA

Get the tissues ready. Lion is a true story that follows a young boy named Saroo, who is separated from his family at just five years old. He is adopted by an Australian couple, but he finds himself returning to India 25 years later to search for his birth mother and family. The movie follows a magnificent storyline, with an impressive cast including Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman. It also features incredible scenery from Ganesh Talai and Kolkata (India), as well as Melbourne and Tasmania (Australia).

3. The Grand Budapest Hotel

FILMED IN GERMANY

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a comedic drama that follows a concierge who has been wrongly accused of murder. The hotel is based in a fictional country, the Republic of Zubrowka. Director Wes Anderson shared in an NPR interview that Zubrowka was inspired by the city of Prague, but the movie is actually filmed in Germany. Much of the movie is filmed in a small German town called Görlitz, which won the EUFCN Location Award in 2017. With his distinct and eccentric style, Wes Anderson pulls you into his story and exposes you to the wonderful Grand Budapest Hotel.

4. Under the Tuscan Sun

FILMED IN ITALY

An American writer, while going through a rocky divorce, decides to escape on a 10-day holiday to Tuscany. While in Italy, she impulsively buys a villa and spends the rest of the movie fixing up the house, meeting locals, and falling in love. Under the Tuscan Sun might not be an Oscar-worthy film, but it will definitely have you blissfully dreaming about a life in the rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside.

5. In Bruges

FILMED IN BELGIUM

A comedic thriller, In Bruges follows two hitmen attempting to lay low in Belgium after a botched mission. I won’t give away the ending, but let’s just say it is worth hanging around for. As the title eludes, the film is set in the charming streets of Bruges. Think scenes of ethereal canals and medieval, cobblestoned market squares. Dreamy sites to say the least.

6. The Talented Mr. Ripley

FILMED IN ITALY

This psychological thriller will keep you on your toes while dazzling you with scenes of destinations across Italy. Tom goes to the fictional town of Mongibello to convince Dickie to return home to New York. In the process, he falls in love with Dickie’s lavish lifestyle, so much so that he begins emulating Dickie himself. The Talented Mr. Ripley takes viewers on adventures from the cliffs of Positano, to the islands near Naples, to the iconic cities of Rome and Venice. This film will have you struggling to decide which Italian city to visit first.

7. Hunt for the Wilderpeople

FILMED IN NEW ZEALAND

Absolutely hilarious. Hunt for the Wilderpeople follows a troubled young teen and his foster father, who are both on the run in the New Zealand wilderness. This film by Taika Waititi, who is from New Zealand and also directed Jojo Rabbit, will leave you bursting with laughter and longing to hike Auckland’s Waitakere Ranges.

8. Eat, Pray, Love

FILMED IN ITALY, INDIA, AND INDONESIA

Basic? Perhaps. But let’s be honest, this one is too good not to include. The film is based on the memoir of author Elizabeth Gilbert’s travels, as she seeks to find herself after a tough divorce. Eat, Pray, Love leads viewers through the romantic and vivacious streets of Rome and Naples (Italy), the bustling yet holy corners of Delhi and Pataudi (India), and the serene, scenic island of Bali (Indonesia).

9. Midnight in Paris

FILMED IN FRANCE

Owen Wilson plays a screenwriter and novelist who is on holiday in Paris with his fiancee, Rachel McAdams. When exploring the city alone at night, he is transported back in time to 1920s Paris, and he finds himself crossing paths with the likes of Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. While not terribly hard to do, Midnight in Paris shows viewers just how romantic and picturesque the city of lights truly is.

10. Vicky Cristina Barcelona

FILMED IN SPAIN

Two Americans, Vicky and Cristina, travel to Barcelona for a summer holiday. At an art gallery, they meet a painter who invites them to his rural home for a weekend of scenic views, good food, and great sex. Things get even more spicy when his ex-lover shows up. Vicky Cristina Barcelona brings to life the sultry Spanish summer that many of us can only dream of.

11. Call Me By Your Name

FILMED IN ITALY

A coming-of-age romance for the decade. Elio is spending the summer with his family at their home in Lombardy, when he meets a doctorate student named Oliver. Oliver is staying with them for the summer, while working as an intern for Elio’s father. Call Me By Your Name follows Elio and Oliver’s unexpected love story. The film will have you reminiscing on what it was like to be young and in love, and it will leave you wishing for your own idyllic summer home in Northern Italy.

12. Chef

FILMED IN USA

Jon Favreau plays Chef Carl Casper, who trades in his job as head chef of a fancy restaurant to open his own food truck. He uses travels across America to rediscover his passion for cooking, stopping in food capitals such as Los Angeles, New Orleans, Austin, and ultimately Miami. Chef is a feel-good movie that exemplifies one of my favourite aspects of traveling, discovering the soul of a city through its unique food and drink culture.

13. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

FILMED IN USA, CANADA, CAMBODIA AND INDIA

Based on the 1922 short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is about an orphan who is born as an elderly man, but ages in reverse. The movie is filmed mostly in New Orleans, but it also follows Benjamin to beautiful parts of the world, such as Paris (which is actually filmed in Montreal), Cambodia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and India.

14. Crazy Rich Asians

FILMED IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

This modern day rom-com follows Rachel and her boyfriend Nick, as they travel to Singapore to meet his family. To Rachel’s surprise, Nick is a member of one of the richest families in Singapore. Crazy Rich Asians is a light-hearted, feel-good film that features jaw-dropping exotic scenes across Malaysia and Singapore. Perfect for some travel inspiration as you lay on the couch all Sunday.

15. Out of Africa

FILMED IN AFRICA

A 1985 classic, this film won seven Academy Awards. Although a bit dated, the cinematography of Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve are just as impressive today. Out of Africa follows lead actress Meryl Streep in her journey to Kenya to start a coffee plantation. I will admit, the plot line isn’t overly thrilling, however the sweeping shots of The Mara’s savannah will have you planning your safari escape to Kenya in no time.

16. Into the Wild

FILMED ACROSS THE USA

This biographical drama is based on Christopher McCandless, a young man who graduates from college and sells all of his possessions to hitchhike across the United States of America. He ultimately ends up in the Alaskan wilderness, where he sets up camp and lives in the wild. Into the Wild is one of those movies that is sure to leave a lasting impression on the viewer. Between the riveting story line and the scenic road trip views across North America, this travel film is one you will not soon forget.

17. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

FILMED IN HAWAII

With a cast including Jason Segel, Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Russell Brand, and Paul Rudd, it is almost impossible for this movie to not be side-splittingly hilarious. Our main character, Peter Bretter, breaks up with his girlfriend, Sarah Marshall, and escapes on a holiday to Hawaii in an effort to forget her. To his dismay, he finds out she has checked into the same hotel with her new beau. Forgetting Sarah Marshall is not only one of the best comedy travel films out there, it features enticing shots across the island of Oahu.

18. The Motorcycle Diaries

FILMED ACROSS SOUTH AMERICA

Ernesto Guevara is known by many of us today as the Argentine Marxist revolutionary and guerilla leader, Che Guevara. This movie follows a young Che, as he sets out on a road trip across South America with his best friend Alberto Granado. The Motorcycle Diaries brings you on their journey of discovering themselves, as well as the magnificent, natural beauty of a South American road trip.

19. A Bigger Splash

FILMED IN ITALY

A rockstar and her boyfriend are holidaying on the Sicillian island of Pantelleria when her ex boyfriend and his sultry teenage daughter show up for a surprise visit. What starts as a rom-com quickly turns to a thriller in the end. A travel film by Luca Guadagnino, who also directed Call Me By Your Name, A Bigger Splash has a whimsical feel to it that instantly transports you to the rocky cliffsides of Pantelleria.

20. The Proposal

FILMED IN ALASKA

Margaret, a ball-busting New York editor, faces imminent deportation back to Canada. To avoid being sent home, she blackmails her assistant Andrew into marrying her, which leads them to returning to his hometown in Alaska. The Proposal is hilarious, light-hearted, and will have you realising by the end that Alaska might soon reach the top of your travel list.

21. 50 First Dates

FILMED IN HAWAII

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore are a match made in cinematic heaven in 50 First Dates. The film follows a veterinarian named Harry, who falls in love with a young women named Lucy who suffers short-term memory loss. Each day represents a new opportunity for Harry to convince Lucy of their romantic feelings towards one another. Set in dreamy locations across the island of Oahu and the North Shore of Hawaii, I found myself wishing I could also relive their first dates over and over again.

22. Pride and Prejudice

FILMED IN ENGLAND

The original Bridgerton, Pride and Prejudice is a classic based on Jane Austen’s 1813 novel. Starring Keira Knightly, the film follows five sisters in their quest for love and the need to overcome pride and prejudice for it. Featuring beautiful shots of lavish estates and quaint English countrysides, this travel film instantly transports you to 19th century England.

Oneironaut – You will smell Oneironaut on Brick Lane before you see it! This handmade candle and incense shop creates unique crave-able scents that anyone on your list would be happy to fill their home with. Bonus, the candles come in clay pots that can be reused for flowers or pants once you have used up the candle.

Many of the brands they carry are also eco conscious, including my favourite, the Girlfriend Collective.

Article – These guys pride themselves on stocking globally sourced streetwear and do a damn good job of it. Great stop for the fashion forward man in your life, seeing as they only stock menswear. Not a fashion forward man? Fret not. They also have a great homeware and unisex accessories selection.

Goodhood – Effortlessly cool. You can always count on Goodhood to have a highly curated selection of minimalist menswear, womenswear and lifestyle luxuries.

3. For the Luxe Lounger

Okay, confession. I can’t be sure that any of these next three brands are located in East London. BUT, they are local to London and are worth considering as a gift for any loved on.

Flashback Records– Since getting a record player 6 months ago, we have loved collecting vinyls from artists old and new. If there is a music lover in your life, vinyls feel extra thoughtful. Just make sure they have a record play to play them on! Flashback Records has three stores in London, the Islington location being our favourite. Their staff is always super helpful and their selection is incredible.

As we navigate this pandemic, the world is experiencing times of turmoil like we’ve never known. These past days, weeks, and months have been tough, but there can be solace in knowing we are in this together. During these unprecedented times, it is more important than ever to continue supporting our local businesses and fellow creators. For this reason, I have teamed up with an immensely talented group of travel bloggers based in London. In this post, we share some incredible shops in our community, and we highlight how you can support them both during and after lockdown.

KAITLYN, Founder & Photographer at Trust Me Travel (The blog You’re on Now ♥)

What is an adored London business of yours?

Atis, a local eatery near Old Street, continues cooking up a delicious assortment of seasonal salads and grain bowls. I love their mission of serving ‘powerful food’. Food that tastes good and does good – for the body, the soul, and the planet. Food you can feel good about eating, and a business you can feel good about supporting.

How can we support them during lockdown?

Atis has been brilliantly resilient during these turbulent times. They are open for lunch and dinner, Monday-Friday. You can order directly from their Old Street location with hands-free service, you can order from their website and collect from the shop, or you can order to your doorstep through Deliveroo. In addition to their standard menu, you can also stock up at their shop on milk (and their alternative counterparts), eggs, hand made granola, coffee, rice, quinoa and a number of other pantry favourites.

What is your favourite item(s) to order from there?

Any of their curated seasonal bowls, which are always changing. They do a phenomenal job of working with local purveyors to showcase yummy seasonal produce. To wash it down, a kombucha is usually my go-to.

What are you looking forward to enjoying there again after lockdown?

After lockdown, I’m really looking forward to securing a window seat in their shop, grabbing a flat white and a salad bowl, and settling in for the afternoon.

@atisfoodldn | www.atisfood.com

ELKE FROTSCHER, architect, storyteller, travel photographer at @ELICE_F • ELKEFROTSCHER.COM

@elice_f | www.elkefrotscher.com

What is an adored London business of yours?

Wood St Coffee. As a freelance design consultant and photographer, coffee shops meant a lot to me before the lockdown. When not travelling on assignment, but editing and writing, I love the atmosphere, the white noise, the community of London’s independent coffee culture. Wood St Coffee roast their own beans, serve excellent healthy food and are amazing people keeping not only craftsmen and statist of the Blackhorse Workshops caffeinated, fed and connected.

How can we support them during lockdown?

They kept their space open to customers as long as possible, selling local produce and coffee beans until they had to close the café, but they’re still roasting now. They’ll deliver whole or ground beans to locals and ship to areas that are not within bicycle reach.

What is your favourite item(s) to order from there?

I have a grinder at home, so I use their whole beans and now have different kinds in my kitchen, for various brewing methods. They have put together online tutorials on how to make good coffee at home and share their recipes too now.

What are you looking forward to enjoying there again after lockdown?

I’m looking forward to sitting in their plant filled but uncluttered space, working on my laptop and chatting with Gareth, the owner/roaster about community, coffee and life in general – while having a cup of coffee.
What do you love most about them?

Their ability to create such delectable dishes from only a few ingredients. Their attention to quality produce and seasonality makes the simplicity of their food that much better. And the place is just full of joy.

How can we support them during lockdown?

Though they’re not operating a delivery system, we can support Stoney Street by following along on their Instagram for updates, volunteering opportunities, or recipes to make at home and share online. Tagging them in photos from past visits or the recipes you try at home, I’m sure, would make them really happy.

What is your favourite item(s) to order from there?

What is an adored London business of yours?

We love Honey & Co, a tiny diner serving Middle Eastern street food in Fitzrovia. Their intensively flavoured salads and vegetarian brunch sharing platters have us lining up for a stool by the window whenever we’re in London. While they’ve expanded now with an additional restaurant, they haven’t lost their independent vibe.

How can we support them during lockdown?

Easy. They’ve started doing pickup dinners where you can order a 2-course set menu which you collect from their Warren Street store. Tonight we’re having BBQ tahini eggplant with jewelled rice with creamy feta dip with olives. Meat eaters will be enjoying slow cooked lamb braised in tomatoes and red wine. It’s a great way to keep them going during lockdown and having a night off from cooking yourself.

What is your favourite item(s) to order from there?

Their cookbook, Food From the Middle East, is full of heart-warming and inspiring recipes complete with beautiful photography.

What are you looking forward to enjoying there again after lockdown?

They also offer a bespoke subscription service, where a staff member will hand-pick books you might like based on your personal taste. Their bookshop is a shining example of how small businesses can stand out amidst a crowded commercial market.

How can we support them during lockdown?

Although the storefront is closed, their staff is available by phone, email, or post for mail orders. You can browse their current catalog and featured books on their website, or send in a request for a specific book. They’re also offering thematic book bundles during lockdown, including Classic Crime and 20th Century Novels.

What is your favourite item(s) to order from there?

Fantasy and historical fiction are my favorite genres, and I love buying travel guides before a big trip.

I miss the thrill of wandering through John Sandoe’s shelves and discovering new stories to love. Ebooks serve a purpose, but there’s nothing quite like the feeling of cracking open a physical book.

What is an adored London business of yours?

One of my all-time favourite bakeries in London is Crosstown Doughnuts.

What do you love most about them?

Their handcrafted doughnuts are always so beautifully made, and they taste just as good as they look. I love that they constantly experiment with flavours, not just with toppings and fillings, but also by adding interesting twists to their signature sourdough.

How can we support them during lockdown?

If you’re still struggling to book supermarket delivery slots, or simply want to limit your trips out for essentials, Crosstown’s here to help. They have recently teamed up with independent local brands to deliver curated food boxes in and around London. They’ve also set up an option to donate grocery or doughnut boxes to a number of London hospitals as a way to thank those who have been working tirelessly on the frontlines.

What is your favourite item(s) to order from there?

Their vegan collective boxes have been a real treat during lockdown, but if we’re only on the subject of doughnuts, then it has to be their matcha tea ones. I’m a lover of all things matcha, so that’s a clear winner in my eyes!

Conclusion

As they say, this too shall pass. I hope you enjoy this guide to supporting local businesses in London and wherever you are in the world, are staying healthy and safe.

“Church on Side of Mountain Italy”

Did you search something similar, trying to find what and where this picturesque church is? You are not alone. The sanctuary you are looking for is Santuario Madonna della Corona. It is an Italian church built into the side of a mountain, creating a wonderful collision between heaven and earth. It is not a myth, and it is even more beautiful than it sounds. Situated in Northern Italy, and within driving distance of Verona and Lake Garda, I highly suggest adding this to your itinerary if you are in the area.

How to Get to Santuario Madonna della Corona from Verona

The easiest way to reach Santuario Madonna della Corona from Verona is by car. There are train and bus options, but this requires multiple transfers and a bit more patience than we had time for. By car, there are two routes to reach this cliff-side church.

1. Access to Sanctuary of Madonna della Corona from Spiazzi

Spiazzi is a small mountain town located just above Sanctuary of Madonna della Corona. From Spiazzi, you can easily walk or take a shuttle bus to the sanctuary.

The drive from Verona to Spiazzi is a beautifully scenic one hour journey. You can park at Parcheggio Santuario Madonna della Corona, a free parking lot that is just a short distance to the walking paths and the shuttle.

Walking Path from Spiazzi

If you are able, I highly suggest walking to the sanctuary. The path provides sweeping views of the valley below and the surrounding mountain peaks. The trek is not difficult, and it takes roughly 30 minutes to descend and reach the sanctuary. This will still allow for a leisurely pace and enough time to take in the jaw-dropping sights.

There is a clearly paved path leading from Spiazzi to the Sanctuary of Madonna della Corona. As you walk down, you will pass an alpaca farm on your left and a number bronze cast works by Raffaele Bonente along the way. As you near the church, there will be the option to reach the sanctuary with a set of steps or through a trail in the woods.

Shuttle Bus from Spiazzi

The shuttle departs every 30 minutes, but please note that it only operates June through October. Tickets are €1.80 one-way or €3.00 round trip. You can read more about the shuttle and book tickets here.

2. Access to Sanctuary of Madonna della Corona Via Pilgrim’s path or Path of Hope

From the town of Brentino Belluno, you can instead hike upwards to the Sanctuary of Madonna della Corona. We would have loved to take this route, but simply didn’t have the time. This used to be the only way to access the church, and I imagine the trail boasts some impressive views.

This hike is 2 hours in length, covering approximately 2,425 meters with 1,540 steps. From Verona, it is a 45 minute drive to Brentino Belluno. If you have ever done this hike, please let me know! I would love to hear how it compares to the walk from Spiazzi.

Best Time to Visit Santuario Madonna della Corona

The Sanctuary is open all year long: from November to March 8am-6pm and April to October 7am-7:30pm. You can double check opening times and holidays through the link here. We visited during winter, which offered beautifully crisp and clear conditions. I would also love to see the church in spring, when it is surrounded by a more lush, green forest.

Best Photo Ops of Santuario Madonna della Corona

The Sanctuary of Madonna della Corona is one of those places that pictures can never truly do justice. That being said, my favorite view and photographs of the sanctuary come from the wooded walking path on the way down from Spiazzi. Peaking through the trees, this also served as our first glimpse of the church which made it all the more special. From this path, you can best capture the almost uncanny, cliffside placement of the church.

As you approach the steps leading up to the church, you can also capture some great close-up shots. This is the best way to capture the incredible architecture and detail of the Santuario Madonna della Corona. Please be mindful that the sanctuary is still a cherished place of worship for many, so you should always be respectful. If you choose to enter the church, ensure your shoulders and feet are covered and refrain from taking photographs.

Places to Visit Near Santuario Madonna della Corona

While visiting the Sanctuary of Madonna della Corona, there are a few places along the way that are definitely worth the stop.

1. Verona

Verona is a great access point, as well as a wonderfully historic and charming city to visit. It can be accessed from the rest of Europe relatively easily by plane. If you are already in Italy, it is well-connected by train. If you do go, I’ve put together a post here on the Amazing Things to See & Do in Verona, Italy.

2. lago di garda

Lake Garda is a crystal-clear lake surrounded by spectacular mountains. It is only 1.5 hours drive from the Sanctuary of Madonna della Corona, and it is a famous holiday destination amongst Italians and Europeans. The lake is a perfect destination for swimming, sailing, hiking and mountain-biking. We stayed in the peaceful and naturally stunning town called Arco, located in the area of Trentino in Northern Italy. I can’t suggest this serene corner of Italy enough, especially in winter. If you make it, be sure to check out our Weekend Guide to Visiting Lake Garda, as well as 10 Awe-Inspiring Things to Do in Lake Garda while you’re there.

3. Monte baldo

The rocky mountain that Sanctuary Madonna della Corona is nestled into is Monte Baldo. It is roughly a 30-minute drive from the sanctuary to the cable car Malcesine Monte Baldo. This cable car provides 360-degree views of Lake Garda, Monte Baldo and the many Italian villages below. Be sure to check their website for openings and rates on passes when planning your trip.

Conclusion

Visiting Santuario Madonna della Corona will likely take you a bit out of your way, but I can confidently say that it is well worth the detour. Everything about it is striking. From the cliff-hanging hidden location, to the sun stained pink architecture against the dark grey mountain, it truly is a special place to witness. I hope you found these tips helpful. As always, let me know if you make it!
