Copenhagen is such a welcoming place, and the city is perfectly fun-sized for a weekend getaway. We went in winter time, when grey skies and cold weather means the Nordic coziness (or ‘hygge’) is in full effect. This concept is felt in every bar, shop, and cafe. Not to mention the good ol’ fashioned hospitality of the Danish people!
From an anarchist hippie-town to the world’s second-oldest amusement park, every corner of Copenhagen is full of surprises. Without further adieu, here’s our favorite things to do in Copenhagen!
Neighborhoods in Copenhagen
Nyhavn – The highly photographed waterfront area is lined with colorful townhomes and restaurants. Live like a local and enjoy a beer on the quay, or grab an outside seat at one of the canal side restaurants. However, we recommend saving your appetite for something more authentic, and less touristy.
Christiania – An alternative hippie-town in the middle of central Copenhagen, it all started in 1971, when a few hippies turned some abandoned military barracks into their home. This evolved into a self-sustaining community that governs itself independently from the Danish government. Now, Christiania is most known to tourists for Pusher Street, or its “Green Light District”. We read that most of this was shut down due to a recent incident involving police violence, but we still found many stalls selling marijuana and hash to hazy-eyed wanderers.

Things to See in Copenhagen
Strøget – This is the main shopping street. We have an admiration for retail and storefront design, so despite the expensive price tags we were able to enjoy it. Spend an afternoon lazily wandering through the thoughtfully curated stores and Scandi boutique shops.
Rosenborg Castle and King’s Gardens – the fact that the castle is so centrally located makes it even more impressive. We strolled around and took pictures in the surrounding area of King’s Gardens. You can also experience the impressive interior, which is home to the Crown Jewels.
Afterwards, get some greenery (not the Pusher Street kind!) at the Copenhagen Botanical Garden. It’s just a 5min walk away, and it’s completely free.
Christiansborg Palace – the former home for kings and queens, the palace now boasts the tallest tower in Copenhagen. We enjoyed the panoramic view of the city, but I wouldn’t say this is a “must-do”.
Tivoli Gardens – the second-oldest operating amusement park in the world. Great photo op if you’re willing to pay the entrance fee.
Thing to Do in Copenhagen
Cozy up in a cafe, restaurant, or bar. We mentioned it earlier, but these places all make an effort to bring the ‘hygge’ vibes. But it ain’t all just the fluffy blankets and drippy candles, Copenhagen has an amazing food scene as well! Check out our post on Where to Eat & Drink: Best Restaurants in Copenhagen.
Rent a bike. Within minutes of arriving, you will notice there are more bikes than cars on the roads of Copenhagen. There are clearly defined cycle lanes, so you don’t have to worry about being run off the road. After a long weekend, we felt like we explored almost the entire city – but we will definitely be back!
Hopefully, this has convinced you to visit the beautiful city of Copenhagen. Stay tuned for our full itinerary and where to stay. Do let us know if you make the trip!
